New Beckley officers sworn in

Five new Beckley Police officers were sworn in Tuesday by Mayor Emmett Pugh.

Pugh conducted the ceremony in Council Chambers at City Hall, and according to Police Chief Tim Deems, the new officers will fill vacancies within the department due to three retirements and two resignations.

The process to hire new officers began in June when the department accepted applications for those interested in taking the civil service test, Deems said. They received a total of 60 applicants.

The test was given in July and from there, all applicants were ranked according to score. Of the 41 who took the exam Deems said 21 passed.

“From there, the 21 who passed the test were called in for a physical agility test, which consists of a mile and half run, push-ups and sit-ups,” Deems explained. “Out of the 21 applicants, 11 showed up and passed the agility test.

“From there, we did background investigations, psychologicals, physicals and oral interviews which narrowed the pool to the five officers who were sworn in Tuesday.”

The newly sworn officers are Steven Jehl, 30; Jarrod Martin, 28; Mitchell Waugh, 23; Angela Stroud, 37; and Michael Deems, 18.

These five individuals will begin their careers at Beckley Police as patrolmen, Deems said.

Two of the officers, Jehl and Waugh, come to the department already certified, Deems explained. Jehl spent two-and-a-half years with New York Police Department, while Waugh served on the Point Pleasant force.

These two officers will spend eight weeks with a veteran officer before they are let loose on the job, Deems said.

The other three officers will be sent to Police Academy in January, Deems said, where they will receive 16 weeks of training. After they have completed the training, they will then spend another eight weeks riding with a veteran officer.

Deems said he is happy and excited to hire the new officers.

“We are dedicated to creating and preserving an environment that offers a sense of security, safety and well-being to all the people in within the community,” Deems added.

Beckley Police Department adds 2 Spyder motorcycles

By Nick Brockman Register-Herald Reporter The Register-Herald Thu Aug 25, 2011, 12:00 AM EDT

A couple of spiders have infiltrated the Beckley City Police Department in the form of new patrol vehicles.

The department officially introduced two BRP (Bombardier Recreational Products, Inc.) Can-Am Spyder Motorcycles to the fleet on Wednesday afternoon.

“This is the first time, actually, the Beckley Police Department has had a motorcycle unit in 30 years,” said Timothy P. Deems, Beckley chief of police. “I think around 1981 was the last time that we had a motorcycle unit, so this is an addition to the police department. These were funded and purchased through the Governor’s Highway Safety Program at no cost to the city for these, and they come fully equipped with the lights, siren, radar and a camera.”

Deems said the three-wheeled motorcycles will be used for DUI patrols, checkpoints and aggressive driving patrols as well as other special events.

“It gives us the ability to get through traffic, and it provides for some visibility within the community that we can use as a public relations tool, utilize them for parades and escorts,” he said. “I think it benefits the department as well as the Highway Safety Program.

“We plan on utilizing them every opportunity we have. We certainly don’t expect the officers to be out in bad weather in rain and so forth, but whenever the weather is nice, we’ll have them out. I plan on having officers trained on each shift so they can utilize them 24 hours a day.”

Currently, there are four officers trained to use the motorcycles. Each of the four officers completed a three-day motorcycle training course. During the course, officers learned about motorcycle safety and how to employ the equipment.

Deems said the officers were excited to start using the motorcycles, and he plans to train even more individuals to use the bikes.

“We probably got another month or so of decent weather that we’ll be able to utilize them, and I plan on getting a few more officers trained, so we’ll have a full complement of officers that will be able to start using them next summer, in the spring,” he said.

Deems said the motorcycles are just another tool the department will employ in highway safety.

“I want to emphasize the importance of DUI prevention and education, as well as enforcement in the community,” he said. “We want to just make sure our highways and streets here in town are as safe as they possibly can be.”

The two motorcycles were initiated into regular patrols on Wednesday.
