Lonnie Christian, a 17 year veteran of law enforcement was appointed as the Chief of Police for the City of Beckley in February 2014.
Prior to becoming Chief, he rose to the rank of Captain and was the Support Services Commander for department. He has held numerous positions within the department and has been the coordinator for most of the technology projects implemented over the past 10 years.
Chief Christian holds an Associate in Applied Science degree from Marshall University, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Mountain State University, and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Mountain State University. His other professional achievements include migrating the departments in-car camera systems and photo labs to digital; the design of the new police cruisers; the development and implementation of the Field Officer Training Program; the creation of numerous departmental policies and procedures; moving the Police Records Division to paperless; transitioning the Police Records Division to a full access agency within NCIC; instituting regular audit procedures and barcoding within police evidence; the creation and publishing of the department annual report for the past ten years; and revamping many of the forms utilized every day.
Chief Christian has two main broad goals for the department. The first is to strengthen communications both internally and also externally in interactions between our members and the community. A second goal is investing in our employees in order to enhance and develop the decision making and leadership abilities of our personnel.
